Local copy of a remote server

Hello all, quick question for the masters of SPIP ; I’ve been asked to maintain a charity’s SPIP site which the original creator and admin doesn’t have time for anymore due to other commitments.

Since I had never worked with SPIP before it seemed a good idea to create a local copy of the site to experiment on without the risk of accidentally bringing the website down. However, the copy of SPIP on the server hasn’t been updated for about year, and I’m not actually sure which version it’s using ; the private area lists version 2.0.7, but changeset 13596, which corresponds to version 2.0.3 . This means that I don’t know which version of SPIP to install locally to ensure compatability, and I’d prefer not to risk downtime by updating the server before I’ve tried it out to get a feel for the procedure.

Does anyone know how I can find out which version is actually running and where I can download a copy (could I copy it from the server itself, though this might be complicated by there being 3 different SPIP folders in the server root) ?

PS I just checked and the changelog in one of the SPIP folders lists changes only from 2.0 -> 2.0.1 -> 2.0.2 -> 2.0.3

you can check the version of your spip, by editing the file ecrire/inc_version.php around line 400
// numero de branche, utilise par les plugins // pour specifier les versions de SPIP necessaire // il faut s'en tenir a un nombre de decimales fixe ex : 2.0.0, 2.0.0-dev, 2.0.0-beta, 2.0.0-beta2 $spip_version_branche = "2.1.0"; // version des signatures de fonctions PHP // (= numero SVN de leur derniere modif cassant la compatibilite et/ou necessitant un recalcul des squelettes) $spip_version_code = 15375; // version de la base SQL (= numero SVN de sa derniere modif, a verifier dans le fichier ecrire/maj/sv10000.php) $spip_version_base = 14559;
in this example, it means a SPIP version 2.1 (svn [15737]) with SQL engine version 14559

if you’re looking an old releases, please have a look to
http://files.spip.org/spip/archives/

if it fails, you can also try to copy locally the files you’ve got on your server (remove files of the config directory to force the reinstallation)

Thanks for your speedy reply. I checked the inc_version.php file and found ;

$spip_version_branche = "2.0.0 dev" ;

$spip_version_code = 12691 ;
// version de la base SQL (= numero SVN de sa derniere modif)
$spip_version_base = 12010 ;

so now I’m really confused ; am I using version 2.0.0, 2.0.3 or 2.0.7 ?

Rather than try to work it out, I did as you suggested and copied the contents of the server and tried to run it under EasyPHP. However, whenever I access the server copy at http://localhost/, it redirects me to the remote server site (I checked this, it doesn’t display anything without an internet connection). I assume this means that the server contains code to automatically redirect to the remote server ; do you know how it might be doing this ?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I’m mostly learning as I go along.
