Images don’t display

There is a strange condition with my installation which I cannot understand and hope somebody can help me with. All pages which include images will not display - this includes pages in the private area and on the site. The site is very simple and has worked well for over a year.

Suddenly images will not display, nor does any text associated with the page. Instead there is a blank page without error message. The odd thing is, images do not display in the private area so I am unable to edit articles and have to click the back button.

I have removed the spip installation, deleted the database and then reinstalled the database and spip installation with a working backup from a few months ago. I have updated all the plugins and spip to the latest version.

If I edit the articles outside of spip in the sql database and delete any reference to images included in the articles, the pages display correctly both in the private area and on the site.

Maybe your server or your htaccess has changed ?

Make sure that you’re running PHP 5+ and SPIP 2.1.14.
Could you give us your URL to check what may happen ?

Hi - I suspect something with the server...

I’ve deleted all the images from articles so that they display. The URL is http://plantman.plantcad.com Click on the Features section in right hand menu - I have just added an image to the article to show what happens. I can’t even edit this page in the private area once an image is added, I have to delete the image reference from the database first. I’ve tested this with all plugins disabled but get the same result.

I’m running SPIP 2.1.14 but not sure on the PHP version. Everthing was fine a week ago !

you’re using a apache behind a squid proxy (weird )
to know yr php version go to ecrire/ ?exec=info

please try :
- to disable squelettes folder (just by renamming it _squelettes)
- to disable graphic function : in the configuration menu > advanced menu > can you see a graphic library available ? please also check "Do not generate thumbnails."

Thanks - I found the php version in cpanel - 5.2.17

I’ve disabled the squelettes folder

I can’t see a ’graphic library’ section available in the advanced configuration but have turned off thumbnail generation. The thumbnail conversion was set to gd1

Have also disabled all plugins - still the problem remains in the article which has an image (.gif ) included http://plantman.plantcad.com/article.php3?id_article=1

i dont understand what happens ... maybe someone will solve this out ...otherwise you may add your img by adding directly the html into your article <img src="http://plantman.plantcad.com/IMG/gif/dbase3.gif" alt="test" />

Thanks, this looks like a workaround for the time being.

The other side effect of this image display issue is that I’m unable to use plugins which include images within their interface like zengarden.
So when I try to select or change themes, I get a blank page with ’Choose your theme’

So after testing my site at another web host I found there were no issues with image display. I questioned my support people and got the following reply.

It appears this was caused by a new security update we have applied to prevent the use of base64_decode inside the eval function within PHP. Some of your Wordpress plugins are using this function (in a legitimate way) which is unfortunately conflicting with our security policy. This security feature is implemented using suhosin which we have disabled - look in the Web Security section on your control panel for full control over this

While images are now displaying correctly on the web side they are still not working in the private area. This is an issue for plugins which display images, their functionality is limited or not accessible. I’ll keep asking questions of my hosting provider, I wonder if there are any configuration options in spip which might fix the problem ?

My hosting provider has provided additional information about managing the suhosin security feature which has caused the image display issue.

They’ve said I should disable suhosin in php.ini with the following configuration :

[suhosin]
suhosin.simulation = On

I can’t find a php.ini file in the SPIP installation - where would an appropriate place be to include this configuration ?

edit php.ini using ssh (the shell), you wont find it in the spip installation

A php.ini file with ‘suhosin.simulation = On’ allowed images to display correctly in the public area of the site however images (including their accompanying text) did not display in the private area.

The solution was to put a copy of the php.ini file into the ecrire folder. The file includes the ‘suhosin.simulation = On’ configuration setting.
